States begin to react to videos exposing Planned Parenthood

Once again, the news in the pro-life world has been dominated by Planned Parenthood. Some of the major happenings are covered below:

The state of Louisiana has notified Planned Parenthood that the state is terminating its contract with Planned Parenthood that allows PP to be a Medicaid provider. The contract between the state and PP allows either party to cancel with 30 days’ notice. Louisiana has now given PP that notice. Louisiana governor, Bobby Jindal, said, “In recent weeks, it has been shocking to see reports of the alleged activities taking place at Planned Parenthood facilities across the country. Planned Parenthood does not represent the values of the people of Louisiana and shows a fundamental disrespect for human life. It has become clear that this is not an organization that is worthy of receiving public assistance from the state.”

The executive council of the state of New Hampshire has voted to not approve renewal of a $650,000 contract with Planned Parenthood in the state. Chris Sununu, a self-described pro-choice councilor who had previously supported Planned Parenthood, voted against PP this time. He said: “Things are different now. We have to take a step back and just take a pause and say 'Is this a company and a business that we should be actively engaging?’”

The state of Alabama has notified Planned Parenthood that it is terminating its Medicaid provider agreement with Planned Parenthood. The contract between the state and PP allows either party to cancel with 15 days’ notice, and the state has now exercised that provision. Commenting on this action, the governor of Alabama, Robert Bentley, said, “The deplorable practices at Planned Parenthood have been exposed to Americans. I've terminated any association with the organization in AL.”

These actions in the various states have been prompted by the continual release of undercover videos showing Planned Parenthood heavily involved in, and making a profit from, the baby body parts business. This week showed another Planned Parenthood executive describing how she first determines how much money PP will get from the sale and then going back and altering the budget numbers—implying that the budgeted amount is supposed to reflect costs.

Planned Parenthood Federation of America president, Cecile Richards, is clearly frustrated by the stream of videos that constantly put the internal actions of Planned Parenthood in full public view. She stated this week that all the videos should be released at once. Her tone revealed that she is obviously concerned about what will be revealed next. And she should be.

Planned Parenthood's troubles grow as another video is released

The undercover videos taken at meetings with Planned Parenthood executives continue to dominate pro-life news this week. A second video was released by the Center for Medical Progress this past week and it is as damning as the first. This video shows a Planned Parenthood official haggling over the price of each specimen (baby body part). When asked for what Planned Parenthood charges, she is very hesitant. She explains she doesn’t want to “lowball” the amount. That means she doesn’t want to ask for less than what the company will pay. Is $50 enough? How about $75. Well, then how does $100 a specimen sound? She seems to agree on the $100 figure, but, at the end of the video, she says she wants to check that price and if others are getting more, she’ll adjust the price upward. Incredible!

We must remember this kind of haggling is illegal. The ONLY legal answer to “What do you charge for the baby parts?” is “Whatever our actual costs are.”

What seems to be fueling the fire of the opposition to Planned Parenthood is the attitude of the PP executives in these videos. They calmly discuss acquiring parts of aborted babies and selling them while eating lunch and even cracking jokes. The medical professional in the second video actually joked that she needed to charge as much as possible because “I want a Lamborghini.” This callousness is outraging even those who have supported Planned Parenthood in the past. You can view the videos at centerformedicalprogress.org

The number of states that have launched investigations of Planned Parenthood following the release of these videos has nearly doubled since last week. Nine states, including Arizona, Georgia, Indiana, Kansas, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Missouri, Ohio, and Texas have announced investigations. In addition, members of Congress have launched an investigation as well.

Legislation to defund Planned Parenthood has been introduced in both the U.S. House and the U.S. Senate. Unfortunately, both bills, as introduced, contain language that cannot be supported by many pro-life groups—including American Life League. As we were going to press with this newsletter, we heard there may be some changes in the language of these bills. We’ll bring you an update on that next week.

Planned Parenthood caught red-handed breaking the law

Pro-life activity has been dominated this week by the release on Tuesday morning of an undercover video by the pro-life group Center for Medical Progress. The CMP video was recorded at a luncheon meeting where undercover investigators, posing as representatives of a company trying to obtain fetal body parts, talked with Dr. Deborah Nucatola, senior director of medical services at Planned Parenthood Federation of America. PPFA’s president, Cecile Richards, was also at the luncheon but did not take part in the videoed conversation.

The video shows Nucatola, an active abortionist, eating a salad and sipping wine as she calmly discusses her procedure for obtaining baby body parts. She talks about checking in the morning which parts are needed that day and explained that these might include hearts, lungs, livers, lower extremities (legs), and other parts of the baby who is being aborted. Many viewers of the video have been as upset by Nucatola’s callous demeanor as they have been by the fact that she talks about getting paid for the service and how the actual abortion procedure she describes seems identical to the illegal partial-birth abortion procedure.

The video caused immediate shockwaves across the pro-life movement and even among many traditionally pro-choice individuals. As we write this, the video has been viewed over two million times.

Several hours after the video became public, PPFA issued a statement denying it sells baby body parts for profit. CMP then immediately released a digital copy of a brochure prepared by an organ procurement company that clearly advertised its services as being financially profitable for the clinics who provide the parts. The brochure included an endorsement of the service from the chief medical director of PPFA’s largest affiliate—one that admitted harvesting baby body parts as long ago as the year 2000.

Political fallout has been swift. Many current candidates for U.S. president have condemned PPFA and its affiliates. Five states (Louisiana, Texas, Indiana, Georgia, and Ohio) announced investigations of PP affiliates in their states and more are considering this action. The House of Representatives has also announced two investigations.

Late on Thursday, PPFA president Cecile Richards released a video apologizing for the “tone and statements” made by Nucatola on the undercover video. She still is insisting that PPFA has done nothing illegal and is providing “compassionate” care.

This is an ongoing story and we will bring you updates next week. Please see this week’s Action Item for what you can do now.

A week of thought-provoking revelations

American Life League has released a report on the annual salaries of the highest paid Planned Parenthood Federation of America headquarters personnel, as well as the CEOs of Planned Parenthood affiliates in the United States. The salary figures were taken from official IRS forms 990. The report shows that the average annual salary for an affiliate PP CEO is $186,071, with 87 percent of them making over $100,000, 37 percent making over $200,000, and 13 percent making over $300,000. PPFA’s CEO, Cecile Richards, reported making $590,928 annually. Planned Parenthood claims it exists to serve poor and unfortunate women. It says 78 percent of its patients receive incomes below the federal poverty level. Yet, the combined salaries of its CEOs was $11,536,408 in 2013. The full Planned Parenthood CEO salary report can be found at STOPP.org.

“Planned Parenthood’s claims of serving the poor are ludicrous given the massive salaries it pays its CEOs,” said Judie Brown, president of American Life League. “In fact, we see by looking at these salaries that PP is more interested in milking the government to line its own pockets off the backs of both the poor and the innocent humans it kills every day.”

The news is filled this week with stories concerning comedian Bill Cosby and the allegations that, years ago, he drugged women for the purpose of having sex with them. What is not being mentioned is that Cosby used to be a member of the Planned Parenthood Federation of America National Board of Advocates. Although we’re sure PP would claim it does not condone this type of behavior, the fact is that Planned Parenthood promotes lifestyles where recreational sex is encouraged and celebrated. The goal is having good sex, not establishing lasting relationships. When one gets caught up in the sexual world of Planned Parenthood, it can be easy to justify all sorts of deviant behavior.

Another hot topic this week is how Colorado is claiming a successful six-year effort reducing pregnancy and abortion rates among teens and the poor. These groups were given free Long Acting Reversible Contraceptives. Although there are unconfirmed reports that abortion numbers are falling across the country, this Colorado project is being hyped because the Colorado legislature is refusing to allocate money to continue it. American Life League issued a press release calling attention to the fact that the types of birth control used in Colorado are abortifacients. Specifically, we said:

With these products, ovulation happens and a new baby can be created when the sperm and egg unite. That new human being travels to the womb, but can’t implant because of the altered endometrium, and then dies. Those involved know this is happening, but hide behind arbitrary 1965 definitions that say (1) pregnancy does not begin until implantation has occurred, and (2) abortion ends a pregnancy. Thus, the girls are not counted as being pregnant and the babies are not counted as being aborted. Colorado may have just concluded six years of the one of the largest government-sponsored killing experiments in American history.

We are no longer a nation of laws, just unregulated judges doing their own thing

In a case known as Obergefell v. Hodges, the United States Supreme Court handed down the following decision on June 26, 2015:

Held: The Fourteenth Amendment requires a state to license a marriage between two people of the same sex and to recognize a marriage between two people of the same sex when their marriage was lawfully licensed and performed out-of-state.

American Life League president, Judie Brown, immediately issued the following statement:

Respect for every human being’s life and the sanctity of marriage is the cornerstone and heartbeat of any nation. Today’s Supreme Court decision strikes at the heart of our nation just as Roe v. Wade did decades ago. Now, by judicial fiat, we are called to honor the fictional union of two people of the same sex. A nation that has lost its values has lost its soul. Our nation has become like a dead body floating downstream, to what destination only the devil knows.

Sister Lucia of Fatima related to Cardinal Carlo Caraffa that “the final battle between the Lord and the reign of Satan will be about marriage and the family. Don’t be afraid,” she added, “because anyone who works for the sanctity of marriage and the family will always be fought and opposed in every way, because this is the decisive issue.” And then she concluded: “However, Our Lady has already crushed its head.”

American Life League strongly opposes all attacks against the dignity of innocent human life and the sanctity of marriage, and will continue the hard work of rebuilding our culture from the ashes of its destruction.

We call on all our readers today to storm heaven with your prayers for America and immediately begin being vocal in defense of true marriage and against this abomination foisted upon us by five Supreme Court justices. May God have mercy on our country.
